Los Angeles- A Window in Time

1769 marked the beginning of the Spanish occupation of California. With it came the expidition of Gasper de Portola. Leading 60 others, he headed north from San Diego through what is now Los Angeles up to Monterey. The group was very much impressed with land near a river's edge. They saw it as being able to supply much vegetation. They also realized it's water supply would make available great irrigation. Juan Crespi, a member of the group, saw it having all the neccessary marks for large settlement. He named the river El Rio de Nuestra Senora la Reyna de los Angeles de Porciuncula, or The River of Our Lady the Queen of the Angeles of Porciuncula.

The San Gabriel Mission was started a few years later in the year 1771 by Junipero Serra and a group of Spaniards as the center of the area's first community.

In 1781, the Pobladores, 12 families recruited from the stated of Sonora and Sinaloa in Mexico to settle in the newly found land and establish pieblos in the name of the king of Spain, started a community in the area Portola had earlier discovered. This group named the the area after the nearby river. After some time, though, the area became known as Ciudad de Los Angeles (or the City of Angeles). In 1850, only a few months apart, the establishment of the County of Los Angeles and the establishment of the City of Los Angeles occured.

Spain continued it's rule of California until Mexico assumed jurisdiction in the year 1822. In 1848, twenty-six years later, the United Stated took over control of California.
