Myths About Concrete Materials

Concrete is one of the most popular and common construction materials used and produced. T is very popular because of its versatility, durability, and its role in the construction. Concrete is versatile because it can come with different colors, can be mold in different shapes, and can be used in different places and for different purposes. Concrete is used in residential, commercial, and industrial constructions. At home, everything can be made of concrete; your floor, wall, countertops, ceiling, and other surfaces besides your foundation. This also applies to commercial and industrial areas too. However, while it plays a major role in different constructions, there are still myths that most people believe about concretes. Here are some of the common myths: 

1.Concrete and cement are similar -most people used these terms as if they refer to the exact same thing. Although cement and concrete can be used interchangeably, the two terms do not refer to the same condition of the material. Cement is an ingredient in making concrete for different purposes like pavement and wall. Besides cement, concrete is also made up of water, aggregates like crushed gravel and sand, additives, and paste.  

2.Concrete is always gray – this is true in most situations because concrete always starts out gray in color. However, concrete does noes always need to end this way. Concrete is popular because of its versatility. This means that the material can mold in different shapes and tainted with different colors. In fact, concrete contractors put some mineral colors while the concrete is still wet. When the concrete hardens, it gives off the tainted mineral colors.  

3. Concrete is impermeable – concrete is obviously a hard surface. However, even the dense concrete is still porous. This means that other substances and liquid can pass through the concrete material, whether in vapor or liquid form. However, the density of the material is a determinant of how long the penetration takes place. The denser the concrete, the longer the liquid and vapor take to penetrate.  

4.The more durable concrete has higher strength. Although it is logical to understand that the higher the strength, the more durable the concrete is, this statement is not entirely true. Concrete is available in different compressive strength. And in order for you to have the most durable concrete, you need to reduce its permeability. Concretes with higher compressive strengths can break down during the freeze-thaw cycle. 

5.There are dead bodies in Hoover Dam – there are a lot of stories about the Hoover Dam and how it has had several dead bodies. “a dam worker falls into the concrete. He would never get out while the concrete continues to pour down n him.” This story is not true. While it is true that more than a hundred people have died in creating the Hoover Dam, none of these bodies have become a part of the concrete foundation and structure. If this happened, it would have already created some structural damage when the bodies start decaying.
